(A) Transduction: nociceptors detect stimulation and convert it to electrical signals, (B) Transmission: neurons transmit these electrical signals to pain-processing structures in the spinal cord and brain, (C) Perception: the signals are conveyed to the various brain regions, where conscious perception of pain occurs, (D) Modulation: the signals can be amplified or decreased in the transmission pathway by descending modulation, causing enhancing or reducing pain sensation.
